September 2026 Servi Christi Event
Hope for Today: Lessons from the Book of Ruth
Presented by Dr. Scott G. Hefelfinger, PhD
Head of Content, Augustine Institute and Concurrent Associate Professor of Theology
At the September Servi Christi gathering, Dr. Scott G. Hefelfinger led attendees through a compelling exploration of the Book of Ruth, revealing how this short Old Testament narrative offers profound lessons of hope for modern life.
Dr. Hefelfinger began by inviting participants to take a first look at Ruth as a beautiful love story. Through the relationship of Ruth and Boaz, Scripture highlights the goodness of friendship, self-giving love, and marriage. At the same time, the story demonstrates God's providence, offering confidence that He remains present and active even amid uncertainty and hardship.
Looking more deeply, Dr. Hefelfinger examined the remarkable virtues displayed by Ruth and Boaz. Their commitment to diligent work, generosity, and loving kindness toward one another and toward Naomi provides a powerful example of Christian character. He emphasized that excellent work and authentic generosity are both signs and sources of hope, qualities that continue to strengthen individuals, families, and communities today.
Finally, Dr. Hefelfinger presented the Book of Ruth as a response to the spiritual and cultural challenges depicted in the Book of Judges. While those ancient times share many similarities with the struggles of the modern world, Ruth points toward a solution rooted in everyday faithfulness. By approaching ordinary responsibilities with extraordinary love, Ruth and Boaz become instruments of God's plan. Their faithfulness ultimately bears fruit in the birth of a child who becomes the great-grandfather of King David, bringing renewed hope to God's people.
Dr. Hefelfinger concluded by encouraging attendees to recognize that renewal often begins not through dramatic events, but through small acts of faith, charity, and perseverance. By building communities grounded in faith and love, Christians can become a powerful force for hope and renewal in the wider world.
The presentation offered an inspiring reminder that even in challenging times, God's providence is at work, and ordinary acts of love and fidelity can have an extraordinary impact on future generations.
